What Animals Can Teach Us About Being Good

We are so excited to announce the premiere of The Human-Animal Connection Podcast on Pet Life Radio.

Premiere

Saturday, July 15th, 2023!

Episode # 1 is about The Power of Good!

It’s so easy for us to look at our dog and say, “Good doggie.” Did you ever wonder if your dog looks at you and thinks “Good Person”?

In The Human-Animal Connection we encourage people to look at their dog and in a loving voice tell them how good they are – because it’s as good for the dog as it is for you! When you say those words (and really mean it) it evokes the feeling of “goodness” in you.

That’s why we call this process Good Medicine. You feel better when you acknowledge the goodness in another being.

Can you imagine silently greeting human beings you meet as “good human!” Even just doing it in your mind brings a lighter mood, a smile, and a sense of goodness to every interaction. Can you imagine if we silently acknowledged the goodness in others on a regular basis? How would it make you feel if you used this Good Medicine daily – even if the other person doesn’t know what you are feeling, they may sense your positive acceptance of them, and that feels good!

Featuring The Human-Animal Connection Podcast

Gregory Maguire said, “Animals are born who they are, accept it, and that is that. They live with greater peace than humans do.” If we deliberately accepted ourselves more often, and those around us who we care about, there would be a lot more good feelings swirling around.

Having animals share our lives is a wonderful way to add more love in your reality. And love is contagious, it spreads to other interactions you have. I tell my students in The Human-Animal Connection classes that we all have a metaphoric “Goodness Tank.” It can be very full, very empty, or anything in between. When it is full, we feel hopeful, grateful, and calm. When it is leaky – like from interacting with people who do not support you – you can doubt your self-worth, your place in the world. Keeping your Goodness Tank full makes you more resilient to the challenges that come your way because you have more sense of a good-self to draw from.

The way to refill an empty or low Goodness Tank is to feel good feelings, to take good actions, to use words that support and encourage yourself. The same way you say “good doggie” you can say it to yourself, using your name. It is like a silent, invisible pat on the back.

The more you use this Good Medicine, the more you have a solid Sense of Goodness that you can call upon whenever you need a little boost. Because the truth is – you are good. You don’t have to get to good – all you need to do is recognize the good that is already there.

To hear more about this please listen to our Human-Animal Connection Podcast Episode 1 to learn more about how to use this practice of Good Medicine with yourself and the animals who share your life.
